Hey all, I have a scenario/ideal build in mind for a hackintosh, but no idea if it is at all possible. I’d really appreciate your help/input. I’ve never done a hackintosh build before and from all appearances it seems scary as hell despite being a computer geek! Lol
I’m a “game developer”. By that I mean I own a company that uses game engines to create serious games, simulations and interactive projects for business clients, mostly in VR.
In light of the new iOS devices, and Macs getting VR support, the demand is there to support and target Macs and iPhones. Right now my main engines are Lumberyard, UE4, and occasionally Unity.
With every project we create both flat and 360 videos for promotional purposes/training.
As much as I want it, I can’t justify the iMac Pro. The screen isn’t big enough, thunderbolt 3 only, no HDMI ports, I want higher clock speeds on those cores, etc. It’s nothing but compromises, and obviously the new Mac Pro isn’t even remotely close to being launched.
We use GPUs for a lot of our rendering, and will be using them more in parallel for creating light maps using OTOY’s Octane renderer for Unity and Unreal soon.
So to that end, here is my ideal build: -AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1950x -Quad AMD Vega FE -128 GB RAM -Multiple SSDs
What I’d like to do is: -Run MacOS High Sierra full-time -Give MacOS access to dual GPUs, one for running software, an additional one for accelerating workloads like FCPX, 3DS Max, Maya, Modo, etc. -Run Windows 10 in a VM, and give it exclusive access to two of the Vega FE cards in Crossfire (What is best? VMware or Parallels?)
So... good people of Reddit. Please advise me. Is this at all possible? Has anyone done this? What are the biggest pitfalls?
I’d appreciate any advice that you’ve got on this, since I’m going in blind! :)
Thanks,
A.
