Keyboard not detected while completing macOS installation

I've managed to get through without as many issues as I expected. There were some times when I was not able to use my mouse or not able to use the keyboard, but I managed to get by cos the other worked.

But now I'm stuck cos I need to type something and I cant. The place I'm stuck is right after the appleID log in screen, when you have to name your computer. This is after the keyboard type selection screen. I'm stuck just before Step 5 on this guide.

My mouse is on the PS2. My keyboard is connected using USB. I am using a known good PC build of mine for this. I'm installing on an external drive. I do not intend to dual boot.

Most instruction sets tell you to disable all the USB3 ports. When I did so in my very first attempt, there were issued. Correlation is not causation but its been smooth sailing so I've carried on. I bring this up cos my Mobo's IO has 4 USB 3 ports, one of which I normally use for the keyboard.

I also have 2 USB (regular) ports on my case so I tried to plug it into that as well. No luck.

I'm not saying I'm thorough and I'm willing to try things again, but I'm getting a bad feeling at this point. So I thought I would ask the internet. And seeing as my google skills have not showed me the way I thought I'd pose the question myself to help those who may come after me.

Do I need some driver? or some special keyboard? Do I need to start again with the USB3 ports disabled? Are my parts incompatible?

All help appreciated!
