By default when using a PS2Controller kext, MacOS will treat your laptop keyboard as a generic keyboard. without proper support for things like volume adjustment and brightness.
The simplest solution that I've found is to install karabiner elements.
Among other things, the applications automatically applies the standard apple keyboard layout to your laptop keyboard.
