Wanting to upgrade from High Sierra to Catalina, have a few questions

Hey all - before I start my specific specs are listed below, I’ll just speak in general terms in the thread. Let me know if I need to provide any extra details.

I am currently running a High Sierra desktop and I would like to upgrade it to Catalina. I am aware NVIDIA Web Drivers do not exist so until I purchase an AMD card I just want to use my iGPU. I have several questions on how I could go about doing this.

Firstly, before I even start I am going to make a clone of my SSD via Carbon Copy Cloner’s trial, and if something stuffs up then at least I can restore. Is it as simple as that or do I need to do something else?

Secondly, from my understanding, as long as I:

  • Update the kexts I have
  • Update Clover
  • Uninstall NVIDIA drivers
  • Install the kexts for my iGPU

Then I can update to Catalina directly via the app store and everything should work just fine?

Would I be missing anything from this list? Should I go High Sierra -> Mojave -> Catalina instead? Are there any guides that I could follow to help make this as smooth as possible?

Thanks, guys!
