Introduction:
If you're experiencing a recovery boot loop on your 15" Late 2011 MacBook Pro after attempting to upgrade to Monterey 12.6, this guide will help you troubleshoot and resolve the issue without access to another MacBook.
Problem Description:
After upgrading to Monterey 12.6, your MacBook Pro is stuck in a recovery boot loop and does not boot past the black screen before login. You cannot access Safe mode or use OCLP to install the operating system.
Solutions:
Recovery Boot Loop:
- Reset NVRAM/PRAM: Start by resetting the NVRAM/PRAM by holding Command + Option + P + R keys during boot until you hear the startup chime twice. This can sometimes resolve boot-related issues.
- Boot in Safe Mode: While you mentioned having difficulty booting into Safe mode, try pressing and holding the Shift key immediately after hearing the startup chime until you see the Apple logo. This should boot your MacBook Pro into Safe mode, allowing you to troubleshoot further.
Reinstalling Monterey:
- Internet Recovery: Since you can access Internet recovery, attempt to reinstall Monterey from there. Follow the on-screen instructions to reinstall the operating system. This should overwrite the existing installation and potentially resolve any boot-related issues.
- Disk Utility: While in Internet recovery, use Disk Utility to verify and repair the SSD. Sometimes, disk errors can cause boot issues.
Creating Bootable USB Installer:
- Using a Windows PC: If you have access to a Windows PC, you can create a bootable USB installer for Monterey using tools like TransMac or Boot Camp Assistant.
- Virtual Machine: Alternatively, you can use a virtual machine running macOS to create a bootable USB installer. Tools like VMware or VirtualBox can be used to set up a virtual macOS environment.
Seeking Community Assistance:
- Hackintosh Forums: Visit Hackintosh forums or communities like InsanelyMac or tonymacx86 for assistance. Members of these communities may be able to provide specific guidance or files needed to resolve your issue.
- Discord Servers: Join Hackintosh Discord servers where you can chat with experienced users and seek help in real-time.
Conclusion:
By following the steps outlined in this guide and seeking assistance from the Hackintosh community, you can troubleshoot and resolve the recovery boot loop issue on your 15" Late 2011 MacBook Pro. Remember to proceed with caution and back up your data before attempting any troubleshooting steps. With persistence and community support, you can restore functionality to your Hackintosh. Good luck!
So I've got a 15" Late 2011 MacBook pro upgraded with 16gb RAM and 500GB SSD. Funny story about how I got it, but that's irrelevant and a story for another time. I had it running Monterey 12.4 perfectly thanks to OCLP. I fucked up when I upgraded to 12.6. Booted it into 12.6(while it was rough, it was functional) and cloned the hardrive to my external hardrive to have a backup. Well I wrote over the bootable 12.4 backup I had before applying root patches or installing OCLP to the hardrive. The second I rebooted it I knew I fucked up and since then I've been trying everything under the sun to unbrick this laptop. It would be so easily solvable if I had another MacBook to just create a new OCLP Installer built for my machine, the issue is I neither have one or access to one to do that. My MBP never makes it past the dreaded black screen before login when at the end of a clean install of Monterey from internet recovery which I am able to access still. Can't get it to boot into Safe mode at that point like everyone says is the fix for said issue. It's essentially stuck in a recovery boot loop. The USB Im using to get into recovery has OCLP on it. But obviously beings I can't get it to boot at the end of the install, I cant run the tool to install it to the SSD. Does that all make sense? Am I explaining it clearly enough? I hope so. I can't find a solution for this one and would appreciate any and all help.
