Frustration is my new baseline emotion

I am trying to install Ventura on my early 2011 mbp, with 16 GB of RAM, using an OCLP installer on a USB drive. I have read all the directions. Twice. I even printed them all out, so I would be sure never to miss a step, and twice now I have received an error that says, "An error occurred preparing the software update." After the first time I tried to install Ventura using OCLP, I clicked OK on the error message, and then realized there was no way to actually boot my mbp in order to create a new USB drive that would install Monterey, instead. I thought that maybe all the shit I read about Ventura fucking up people's computers, and just generally being a nightmare, was what was happening in my case. So, I tried to boot into recovery mode, using CMD+R, and sat with my fingers glued to the keyboard, pressing the required keys, and I waited for my mbp to boot into recovery mode. And I waited. And I waited. After about 30 minutes had passed, I rolled my eyes and let out a heavy sigh, and took my fingers off the button(s). I walked away, and hoped the frustration coursing through my body would fade while I fed my dogs, returned a couple of texts, and went pee.

Filled with a renewed sense of hope, I naively sat down at my desk, and I'm sure I heard my mbp snicker.

Regardless, I soldiered on. This time, I decided to use the magical Opt+Cmd+R combination to try to boot into recovery mode. Again. The spinning glove appeared, and the progress bar progressed, and before I knew it, I realized that my mbp had booted into normal recovery mode, rather than beginning to download and install the most recent OS that runs natively on my machine. High Sierra, I think. High Sierra is what I was running before, at any rate.

Since I was now in regular recovery mode, I decided to open disk utility and attempt to fix my disk, so that I could utilize it. It took a while, but I finally managed to either eject or delete any "drives" that were interfering with my ability to repair my actual HDD (I have an SSD ready to be formatted and installed, and that is a whole other drama. I need to get this bastard machine up and running, and then I will tackle the other problems), and I inserted the USB drive onto which I installed the OCLP EFI whatever-whatever, and I rebooted, with my little fat finger on the Opt key.

By some miracle, I was presented with the bootpicker options, and I picked a boot drive. The one I was supposed to pick, according to the directions I printed, which I also cross-referenced with the directions on the OCLP site that were open on my iPad.

Everything seemed to be going swimmingly, and it looked like Ventura would be installed and I would be able to use my mbp, once again, until BAM! The damned thing said that an error had occurred while preparing the software update. Again.

What the hell am I doing wrong?? I don't have time to sit around dicking with this thing for the next few days, and I don't have access to bags of money with which to purchase a current mbp which, until Apple declares it obsolete in three months, would actually just work when I turned it on.

Really, all I want to be able to do is to use apps, like goddamned Pages, in their updated versions, so that I can get some goddamned work done.

Clearly, I am becoming worked up. If someone would please please please tell me, in detailed, sequential, jargon and acronym-free laymen's terms, what I am doing wrong, and how to fix the problem, I would be so appreciative that if you send me your mailing address, I will send you a delicious apple crumble. Failing that, I will send you all my good mojo (minus whatever I need to keep my mbp running), and I will print your post and create a small shrine to it on the only corner of my desk not covered by OCLP print-outs.
