Clevo N850HK1 / Sager NP6852 / BTO N850HK1 (all models) / Prostar N850HK1

About this laptop:

Readers who wandered into this post might be wondering about the many laptops listed in the title; some explanation is required.

Clevo is the worlds largest (and pretty much only) OEM laptop manufacturer. I bought mine as a barebones, but there are several companies that sell it with storage, memory, and their logo included. Because all other components are identical, there is no reason this guide won't work for those laptops. That's why I also included those laptops in the title.

Status:

  • Audio: both input and output are fully functional
  • HID: both internal and external input devices work; trackpad works. Gestures using more than two fingers don't work, because the trackpad is kind of shit and doesn't recognise three or more finger input at all, no matter the operating system. The keyboard does a surprising amount without drivers; backlight control hotkeys still work, and numlock is also still a thing.
  • Display: Intel Graphics fully supported; HDMI port works. Mini-DP ports are untested. Backlight can be controlled after ACPI patch.
  • Nvidia: Nvidia chip is unsupported and powered off at boot.
  • Wireless: Standard Intel chip is completely unsupported; I recommend getting a BCM943602BAED, or a similar natively supported broadcom chip (you can just paste those letters into AliExpress by the way). With said chip both wi-fi and bluetooth work.
  • Ethernet: It just works (seriously, I didn't even do anything for it).
  • Webcam: Both the webcam and the internal microphone are fully functional.
  • iMessage: iMessage and facetime will not activate; I suspect this is because of incorrect network interface labeling. Do try this for yourself though, it might magically work for you. Card reader: fully unsupported.

Methods:

  • Audio: I used VoodooHDA. I could have probably gotten Native to work, but I spend six hours on it and it was day three of hackintoshing. If your microphone doesn’t work, try editing voodooHDA’s config.plist or just give it a few days. I also applied the rename HDAS to HFED ACPI patch, but I’m not sure if it does anything.
  • HID: use VoodooPS2Controller, combined with applePS2SmatTouchPad.kext. If your trackpad registers as a mouse, just wait a while, it might spontaneously resolve itself.
  • Display: Use IntelGraphicsFixup for improvement. Also patch ACPI to rename GFX0 to IGPU (see Nvidia). Furthermore, I used the ACPI patch from rehabMan to make backlight controls work. If your HDMI port doesn’t work, just give it a few days.
  • Nvidia: Follow the instructions here.
  • Wireless: With supported card, wi-fi works out of the box. Get bluetooth working with BrcmPathRAM2.kext and BrcmFirmwareData.kext.
  • Ethernet IntelMausiEthernet should be in clover by default. If it isn’t, put it in there.
  • Webcam: See this post
  • SmBios: on all levels except physical, my laptop is a MacbookPro13,1

Notes

  • There are quite a few occurrences of “just give it a while” in methods. These are times where I applied a fix but it didn’t work, making me give up, only to find said feature suddenly working a few days later.
