Recently I booted up my Hackintosh running 10.13.2 to find my (admin) user account would not accept my password. I rebooted and the account had completely disappeared. I finally fixed it after many hours by removing .AppleSetupDone and re-running the setup assistant to create a new admin user. I then recreated my original user account and chose to use the existing user folder when it prompted me.
Everything is working as it was before except spotlight. I can't search for Apps in the Applications folder and useful things like image dimensions showing in the Finder preview no longer show.
I've tried the suggested fix to rebuild the Spotlight index for various folders and even the whole drive but it doesn't fix it. I can see the indexing process running in Activity monitor and the CPU usage increases when I force reindexing.
I've also made sure my user account is the owner of the Applications folder and has read/write permission (the newly created admin account was the owner of the directory and my user did not have read/write permissions). I also applied the ownership/permissions changes to enclosed items.
Does anyone have any suggestions to fix this?
I'm quite close to calling it a day on hackintoshes after having several totally corrupt installs for inexplicable reasons like this. I will note that people seem to have these same issues on Apple hardware too.
