How to add user with an already existing /HOME folder on another HDD?

I had setup a RAID0 HDD drive for just my home folder back when I installed Mountain Lion. The OS was installed on a separate SSD. I have just wiped the SSD and installed High Sierra from scratch. I tried to create a user and pointed the user to my old HOME directory on the RAID0 but when i logged in to this user I have no access to all the files due to restricted permissions. What's a proper way to "migrate" this user without actually copying the files to a new location? AFAIK migration assistant will not migrate in-situ correct?
