Clover MBR or GPT for legacy BIOS system

In a year or so when I can afford it I will build a new system with an UEFI compatible motherboard but for now I'm trying to understand how to install OSX on my legacy BIOS only system an Intel Quad Core Q6600.html) and Intel D975XBX2 motherboard.

From what I've read El Capitan is the latest OS that should run on my CPU and motherboard. I have Snow Leopard running in VirtualBox and the El Capitan installer App ready and downloaded from the App Store. Snow Leopard is too old to use createinstallmedia via the terminal so I'm using this excellent El Capitan Upgrade on Snow Leopard guide to create the USB Installer which seems to work fine.

What I don't understand is whether to partition my USB Boot Disk (and destination drive) as MBR or GPT. There is a legacy MBR installation of Windows 10 on my existing SSD drive and I want to install El Capitan on a separate hard drive which I presume will become the boot drive.

Do I format the USB boot disk and destination installation drive as MBR or GPT?

According to this hackintosh thread you format as MBR and choose legacy BIOS options in the Clover Installer. However if I understand correctly this Insanely Mac Article says you can format the installer and destination drive as GPT even though it will run on a BIOS only motherboard and this Insanely Mac thread looks like it says the same thing although the latter is for Windows and OSX on the same hard disk.

Have I understood that correctly? Can you format the USB Installer and destination drive as GPT even though it's on a legacy BIOS only motherboard?

If so I assume you follow the above Insanely Mac guide and the relevant selection is:

  • Install Clover in the ESP
  • Bootloader / Install Boot0ss in MBR

This is my first post so apologies if I break any reddit etiquette.
