One of the main reasons I built a Hackintosh was the near complete lack of Firewire support on modern Macs. I have a ton of legacy Firewire drives that have both useful life and priceless data on them and getting that data into a NAS or SAN was critical. I have both FW400 and FW800 drives so it was also important to be able to use both. I have not tested the 400 connection yet but I have no reason to believe it won't work.
My System:
HP Z220, i7 3770, 16GB
Note - I have not solved sound or the issue with photo previews/thumbnails. Additionally I have not figured out how to load any update requiring a restart when the system is configured as a dual boot. I have to physically disconnect the Win10 drive and force it to be a Mac only.
On to firewire. I installed a Syba SY-PEX30016 3 Port IEEE 1394 Firewire 1394B & 1394A PCIe 1.1 x1 Card TI XIO2213B. I have only used it in Mac mode and I am not sure if it will ever work in Win mode but honestly I don't care that much if it doesnt. It needs a MOLEX power connection so I had to use a OKGEAR Coolerguys 4-Pin Molex Sleeved Fan Extension Cable (18") to connect it.
As a side note - Why the heck did we give up FireWire for USB3? I have been transferring a lot of data as part of my Hacintosh build. I have used a mix of USB2, USB3 and now Firewire. Firewire is the fastest and its not even close. Heck it is faster than the internal SATA to SATA (both on 3gbs SATA) transfers I have been doing (USB3 to internal SATA has been faster that internal to internal too).
Anyway, if anyone else needs to add a cheap Firewire card to their Hacintosh, this one worked for me.
