How to Resolve "StartImage Failed - Aborted" Boot Error in OpenCore

The error "StartImage Failed - Aborted" on an AMD Ryzen laptop (like the Asus Vivobook M433I) indicates that OpenCore is failing to execute the macOS loader. This is commonly caused by Secure Boot conflicts, missing drivers, or corrupted partition maps.

1. Disable Secure Boot in BIOS and Config

Secure Boot is the primary cause of this error when launching macOS installers.

  1. Restart your Vivobook and enter the BIOS setup (tap F2).
  2. Navigate to **Security** or **Boot**, find **Secure Boot**, and set it to Disabled.
  3. Open your config.plist and go to Misc -> Security. Set SecureBootModel to Disabled.

2. Check Booter Quirks and Rebuild EFI

For AMD Ryzen APU mobile setups, ensure your Booter Quirks match the required specifications:

  • Set AvoidRuntimeDefrag to True.
  • Set DevirtualiseMmio to True.
  • Set RebuildAppleMemoryMap to True.
  • Ensure you have copied the latest BOOTx64.efi and OpenCore.efi to their respective directories.

3. Note on AMD Laptop Graphics (NootedRed)

AMD integrated graphics (Radeon Vega) are not natively supported by Apple. To get full graphics acceleration on your Ryzen 5 4500U, you must use NootedRed.kext instead of WhateverGreen. Make sure you delete WhateverGreen.kext from your EFI and add NootedRed.kext in your config.plist.
