Hackintoshing the Intel i7-8550U (Kaby Lake R)
The Intel Core i7-8550U is an 8th-generation Kaby Lake Refresh processor commonly found in premium ultrabooks (like the Lenovo Yoga 920, Dell XPS 13 9370, and HP Spectre). It features the Intel UHD 620 integrated graphics, which has excellent native support in macOS. However, users often face stability issues depending on the OS version and specific ACPI configurations.
Recommended macOS Version
While the UHD 620 graphics are technically supported up to macOS Sonoma (14.x) and Sequoia (15.x) via SMBIOS spoofing (usually MacBookPro15,2 or MacBookPro14,1), the most stable, natively robust OS for this specific generation is macOS Ventura (13.x) or Monterey (12.x).
If you are experiencing random crashes (like Finder dying unexpectedly) on Sequoia or Sonoma, it is highly recommended to downgrade to Ventura. Newer OS versions have stricter memory management and deprecated frameworks that can cause instability on Kaby Lake platforms.
Common Issues & Fixes
1. Sleep/Wake Issues
The most notorious issue on the i7-8550U. Ensure you have properly mapped your USB ports using USBMap. Unmapped internal USB headers (like the touchscreen or Bluetooth module) are the #1 cause of instant-wakes. Additionally, verify that SSDT-GPRW is injected in OpenCore to intercept wake commands.
2. Finder Freezing / Random App Crashes
This is often linked to graphics acceleration (iGPU) power management or faulty NVMe power states. Ensure your `device-id` for the UHD 620 is set correctly in your config.plist under DeviceProperties (usually 16590000 or 00001B59 depending on the spoof). Also, consider using NVMeFix.kext if you have a non-Apple NVMe drive.
3. CPU Power Management
Make sure you are using CPUFriend.kext paired with a custom CPUFriendDataProvider.kext generated for your specific machine. Kaby Lake R runs very hot if macOS cannot properly drop the CPU frequencies during idle times.
Verdict: The Lenovo Yoga 920 with the i7-8550U makes a fantastic Hackintosh, but sticking to Ventura will drastically reduce random freezes compared to running the absolute latest beta operating systems.

What do you guys think about an Intel i7-8550u running MacOS Sequoia?
I've been running this for about 4 months with sleep issues unsolved only. But yesterday Finder just died out of nowhere (it doesn't respond; the only different thing I did was using the Mail app).
Other apps also fail to load (not all). But I haven't been able to tell what went wrong.
I was wondering if I should stick to Sonoma or Ventura instead. Does anyone here use that specific processor? What OS did you stick to?
PS. I'm using a Lenovo Yoga 920 13ikb 4k 80y7 16gb ram, 1tb SSD, UHD 620 only, btw.
