Some tips for updating/upgrading macOS to save yourself some grief

I wanted to share some common sense and things you should do before updating, even if it's just a point upgrade. Do these things before even downloading the update or you'll likely end up with some dumbshit you have to deal with.

  1. Update Clover boot loader to the latest version. Make sure you customize and have all the same options. Reboot.
  2. See if any changes happened with Aptiomemoryfix and the like for working NVRAM.
  3. Now update all your kexts. Every single one of them FakeSMC/VirtualSMC, Lilu, ALL OF THEM. It's tedious to look them up but it's also tedious figuring out why the fuck your update stalls and your staring at the prohibit sign, Apple logo with the progress bar stuck or a verbose screen which you have no fucking idea what it says.
  4. If newer kexts are out, take a look at the change logs, a lot of times you'll see reasons why they were updated and possible other changes that need to be made to your system like your clover config file. Maybe even an addition of a new kexts helper.
  5. After you've updated Clover and ALL your kexts, rebuild your kext cache and permissions. Reboot.
  6. All up to date? Great, it doesn't hurt to do a google search for your system to see successful updates for you system as well. If somethings broke, wait a bit to see how it's fixed.
  7. Search to see if there are new Clover patches for the one you're already using, like the USB limit patch or Framebuffer, or devices etc. Developers are usually testing on betas already so may have some valuable knowledge.
  8. Good to go? NO! Now back up your shit.
  9. Have a working USB installer of your current working version and bootable Clover USB. You should always have this anyways.
  10. Now go do the damn thing knowing if shit happens you can go back to normal and wait till people figure out or fix stuff.

Here's something that will help. Kext Updater is a nice little tool that can even get you started on updating your hackintosh files. It'll check your current versions of kexts and Clover bootloader and download if newer versions are available and put it in a nice folder right on your desktop. It has some nice tools as well.

I know that's a lot of bullshit to do for a point upgrade and you can skip 2,4,6, and 7 most of the times with point updates but with major upgrades, it is highly advisable to do all of them.

Good luck on your updates!
