Hey folks,
When I was running High Sierra I was happily running my 1440p monitor at 144Hz through HDMI 2.0, but after upgrading to Mojave 10.14.4 I cannot seem to force anything higher than 1080p 60Hz which looks not great on a 1440p monitor.
I'm pretty sure it's not my hardware because I've had the same issue on an i7-4790/RX 460 build as well as an i3-6100/R9 380 build.
Even if I try to use DisplayPort, it runs at 1440p but the refresh rate drop-down is greyed out so I don't have the option to run at 144Hz. Additionally I'd like to avoid running through DisplayPort because my other (non-hackintosh) gaming PC requires DP for G-Sync.
Things I've tried:
-
EDID patch found here: https://gist.github.com/adaugherity/7435890 (my screen had a pink tint after upgrading to Mojave, which this patch fixed by forcing RGB mode. I suspect that this might be related to the overall issue, and Mojave all of a sudden thinks my monitor is actually a TV? Not sure.)
-
Lilu/Whatevergreen: Enabling the -cdfon and enable-hdmi20 properties in Clover Configurator for WEG's HDMI 2.0 patches, didn't really do anything for my issue however. Maybe I'm not doing it right, but I'd think CC would enable it properly.
-
SwitchResX and all those apps that claim to enable custom resolutions: This failed because it's a "fake" resolution, and it just ends up looking like 1440p is being squashed into 1080p. The monitor doesn't go black/reset to enable 1440p, if that makes sense. Everything is blurry and it's just not viable.
-
Replacing cables: Didn't work, plus the same cables output 1440p and 144Hz in Ubuntu and Windows without any fiddling.
-
Mojave 10.14.5 Public Beta: Didn't fix anything.
I just want to re-iterate that I had zero issues with this setup in High Sierra and 1440p and 144Hz worked perfectly there (and the same hardware is running 1440p @ 144Hz in Windows right now) so I'm 99% sure this is not a hardware problem.
I could go back to High Sierra but I really don't want to be left in the dust with macOS updates since I want to use this as a development machine and would like to have access to the latest Xcode. It's frustrating because I bought an AMD card to replace my 1060 just to get this hackintosh working because AMD GPUs were supposed to work out of the box, but that seems to have backfired on me :(
Has anyone else run into this issue?
