Using VirtualSMC/SMCSuperIO in userland/cocoa application

I'm wondering if anyone here is familiar with using kext APIs in userland to read/write to superio registers? I believe I'm going to have to use the VirtualSMCSDK in a kext of my own and create some sort of hook to a preference pane or something. Can anyone think of a better way?
