Like others who have an Nvidia dGPU in their laptop and are running Mojave, you are kind of SOL for the time being when it comes to using an external display. In most cases, the HDMI, DP, or TB3 uses the dGPU and not the iGPU, so if it can't be used, then you can't use an external monitor.
I have a ThinkPad X1 Extreme and this is definitely the case. I have the dGPU disabled anyway just to try and reduce fan noise and temps in macOS. I do this in Ubuntu as well for the same reason, but at least I can switch it back to Nvidia in the event I want to use external monitors.
Just made me curious: are there any laptops where these ports utilize both the dGPU and iGPU?
I imagine not, but thought I'd ask. If it worked on iGPU, it probably wouldn't have a dGPU which, while it would run cooler, you couldn't play games on.
