I recently decided to update my Hackintosh to Mojave - and having a very old GPU that was now incompatible, I made the jump to a Sapphire RX 580 Pulse 8GB on recommendations from r/hackintosh.
Did my homework with some reading prior - and sure enough, after a few hours, I had everything working. Motherboard is a GA-Z170X-UD3 with 6700K - running Mojave as iMac 17,1. Rock stable.
Only once in a while, the computer goes from dead silent to fan spinning - without being under heavy load - say, watching Youtube videos - and then, goes back to quiet. It is not load, just a whispery blow from the GPU, lasting 10-20 seconds.
Popped the case open, only to see that ONLY A SINGLE GPU FAN is spinning. I know those cards are made to be whisper quiet at idle, which it is. But it seems the temp creeps up and... a single fan starts - the one further away from the GPU video connectors and then speeds up to seemingly compensate the other one not running. The one fan closest to the back of the case never spins. I tried rebooting the computer, to see if both fans would spin just after a computer reset - if only for a short time - but no luck. Only the one fan spins.
Even under heavy load - I tried Unigine Heaven and Valley and cranked up the settings (still in Mojave), only the one active fan (closest to the front of the computer case) spins up. The GPU temp creeps up to about 77-78'C, and the rendering stays smooth. Never had a crash or a stutter. I just find it very weird that only one fan spins, especially at the moment I turn the computer on.
So... my question : Is this a defective card ? Or is this behavior normal for the Sapphire Pulse. Any of you Sapphire Pulse rx 580 hackintoshers have encountered similar behavior ? Or should I send it back for replacement - both fans should have been spinning ?
TL:DR Hackintosh, bought brand new Sapphire RX 580 8GB. Only one fan spins, even when performing a reset. No crashes, temp at 77-78'C under load. Bad card, or bad config ?
