My last configuration was a nightmare and I could never get it running and while I didn't even think about trying it again when getting this new one, my fingers are crossed:
| Component | Model |
|---|---|
| Motherboard | Asus ROG STRIX X470-F GAMING |
| CPU | Ryzen 7 2700X |
| M.2_1 | Samsung 970 EVO Plus Series 500GB PCIe NVMe |
| M.2_2 | Intel® SSD 760p Series 256GB, PCIe* 3.0 x4 |
| HDD1 | 4TB SATA III |
| GPU | MSI 2080 RTX |
The first and obvious question: How supported is this hardware configuration? On a scale from walk-in-the-park to give-up-now, where do I stand? Are there any caveats I should be aware of regarding audio/video/usb not working properly?
I have yet to go through this process successfully, so a step-by-step would be awesome, otherwise just a little handholding would be appreciated.
Questions/Concerns:
- Currently I have Windows 10 running on M.21 and I'd like to keep it that way. The 256GB Intel NVMe is in the mail. Now, the manual for my motherboard states _* M.2_2 socket shares PCIe clock with PCIeX1_1, when PCIeX1_1 or PCIeX1_3 are occupied, M.2_2 only can support SATA mode.. My GPU is currently sitting in PCIeX1_1 so it looks like I have to move it to PCIeX_2 in order to get that drive to operate faster than SATA III. However, M.2_2 only runs at PCIe 3.0 x2. Will there be a speed difference in running it at PCIe 3.0 x2 vs SATA III mode?
- Will I be able to install OS-X onto M.2_2 without messing with the Windows install on M.2_1? Where will the bootloader be installed?
- HDD1 is currently formatted NTFS. Can I leave it that way and still have OSX access it, or do I need to format it to something else?
- All the fancy Corsair lighting garbage I have running through iCue: I assume I'll lose this and it'll be rainbow puke any time I'm in OS-X?
Any other info would be appreciated. I gave up my MBP for a Surface Book 2 a year ago and I miss a lot of apps for OS-X that just don't have good Windows counterparts. I'll be stoked if I can get this to work out.
