Resolving Boot Picker Issues on Legacy Mac Pros
If you can't see the 'EFI Boot' icon on your Mac Pro 2010 when holding the Option key, it's likely a keyboard or partition map issue.
Troubleshooting Steps:
- Wired Apple Keyboard: Wireless Windows keyboards often don't initialize early enough to catch the 'Option' key command. Use a wired USB keyboard (Apple or PC) plugged directly into the Mac (not the hub).
- GUID Partition Map: Ensure your USB drive was formatted as GUID. If it's MBR, the Mac's firmware will ignore the EFI partition.
- Reset NVRAM: Hold Cmd+Opt+P+R for three chimes. This clears the boot path and forces the Mac to re-scan all USB ports for bootable volumes.
- Hub Conflict: While OCLP recommends a hub for the mouse/keyboard after booting Sequoia, try plugging the USB installer directly into a front port for the initial boot.
Original Question: "EFI Boot doesn't show after installing OpenCore to USB disk"
Hi. I'm trying to install macOS Sequoia to old Mac 4,1 (mid 2010) which is currently on a 10.13.6 High Sierra. After creating macOS installer on a USB disk, I installed the OpenCore to that USB disk. Rebooting and holding alt key (I'm using wireless windows keyboard) doesn't do anything, it doesn't load into the boot option and just boot into default mac disk. The USB drive also doesn't show in Setting's Startup Disk nor in Windows+R recovery mode's Startup Disk lists. Btw, I'm using USB hub for mouse and keyboard as OCLP says in their compatibility list. What else I can try to boot into OpenCore? TIA.
