Guide: Upgrading 2009 27-inch iMac to macOS Monterey

macOS monterey

Reviving a 2009 iMac for Modern Web Browsing

The 2009 27-inch iMac is a great candidate for macOS Monterey, but its non-Metal Radeon 6770M GPU requires specific attention.

What to Look Out For:

  1. Wired Input: Yes, you must have a wired USB keyboard and mouse. Bluetooth drivers are not active in the early boot picker (EFI Boot) or the macOS installer.
  2. GPU Failure: The 6000 series Radeon GPUs are prone to hardware failure. Running a newer, more intense OS can speed this up. Ensure the fans are clean and consider using Macs Fan Control.
  3. Graphics Acceleration: After installation, the UI will be slow until you apply the Non-Metal Root Patches in OCLP. Once applied, Chrome and YouTube will run smoothly.
  4. Safe Mode: If the installer hangs at the Apple logo, try booting into Safe Mode (hold Shift) to finish the setup.

Original Question: "Imac 2009 27inch"

Hello

I have used oclp on my macbook mid 2012 having maxed out specs running sonoma, It runs flawless. I want to upgrade my Imac 2009 27inch which has 16gb ram Radeon 6770M 512MB graphics to Monterey . I need it on that version as my mom uses it for youtube and chrome (basic computing ).

Could you'll help me with things that occur while setting it up that I should look out for? I saw few youtube videos and the 1st thing I saw was that I needed was a wired keyboard and mouse, which I didn't need on the mbp. So my bluthooth apple keyboard and mouse won't work during setup ( for efi bootup).

And what about the gpu failure? Is it common? And how to fix it..?

What are your opinions should I follow?

Hope this message finds you well, Have a great day.
