How to Modernize a 2010 MacBook Pro for the 2026 Web

Reviving a 'Babbage Engine' for Modern Browsing

To make a 2010 MacBook Pro usable for modern websites (Cloudflare, etc.), you need a newer version of Safari or Chrome that supports modern security protocols.

Recommended Upgrade Path:

  1. Target OS: macOS Monterey. It is the most stable version for the 2010 MBP. It provides a modern browser without being too heavy for the Core 2 Duo CPU.
  2. Wi-Fi and Printing: Monterey has excellent support for legacy Wi-Fi and AirPrint protocols.
  3. Hardware Note: With 8GB of RAM, Monterey will run well, but you must have an SSD. If you're still on a mechanical HDD, Monterey will be very slow.

Original Question: "So, my Mac has become PCNG on the net, so let’s give this a try…"

I knew it would happen sooner or later, but my daily workhorse has finally become unrecogniseable online. Due to limited updates, and everyone using cloudflare, I can now access more on my phone than my actual Mac, which means updating websites with newly created assets is a PITA….
Of course, when I tell people my current machine, they look at me like I’m trying to use Babbages original Difference engine.
It’s a 13” mid 2010 MacBook Pro, 2.66 ghz core, 8gb ram, 1240GB of HD.
What’s the furthest MacOS people recommend I push it to? It will be tethered to a desktop, but will need to use the Wi-Fi for printing and internet.
