Making a Base-Model 2010 MBP Usable in 2026
If you have a 2010 MacBook Pro with only 4GB of RAM and a mechanical hard drive, your options for a 'smooth' experience are limited.
Our Recommendation:
- Stick with macOS High Sierra: This is the last OS that runs comfortably on a mechanical drive with 4GB of RAM. It provides a stable, native experience.
- Avoid Monterey/Sonoma: These versions will be painfully slow. The constant background indexing and lack of RAM will lead to frequent 'beachballs'.
- The $30 Upgrade: If your friend wants to use modern macOS, suggest they buy a cheap 240GB SSD and another 4GB stick of RAM. With 8GB and an SSD, this Mac can run macOS Monterey beautifully via OCLP.
Original Question: "What MacOS should I put on this"
This is a friends MacBook Pro mid 2010 and I was going to put OCLP on it, but I’m not sure what macOS I should use because it has only got a hard drive and a 4 GB of ram which I will be upgrading for him at a later date. I just didn’t know what I could put it on for now to make it usable.
