How to Fix Big Sur Installer Freezing
Graphics issues usually stem from an unsupported GPU, missing acceleration patches, or incorrect boot arguments.
Quick Fix Steps
- Verify GPU support: Check if your GPU is natively supported via WhateverGreen docs.
- Update kexts: Ensure Lilu and WhateverGreen are current.
- Check boot arguments: Add
-v keepsyms=1 debug=0x100for debugging, oragdpmod=pikerafor AMD. - Test Metal: About This Mac > System Report > Graphics.
Verification
- Graphics acceleration is smooth.
- Metal is reported in System Information.

As the title says, I managed to get my system to boot and start the installation process. This continues just fine until it hits the "12 minutes remaining" mark and says "Starting Personalization" in the log file. It will then freeze the whole screen (i.e the mouse) and eventually reboot. Does anyone have a solution? OC 0.6.4 i5 9600k msi z390 radeon 5700 8gb Corsair ram 16gb I did have Catalina installed previously but wiped the disk for a fresh restart - so if it helps, I can reinstall it and rebuild the usb from there.
