How to Fix MacOS Catalina to BigSur

Graphics issues usually stem from an unsupported GPU, missing acceleration patches, or incorrect boot arguments.

Quick Fix Steps

  1. Verify GPU support: Check if your GPU is natively supported via WhateverGreen docs.
  2. Update kexts: Ensure Lilu and WhateverGreen are current.
  3. Check boot arguments: Add -v keepsyms=1 debug=0x100 for debugging, or agdpmod=pikera for AMD.
  4. Test Metal: About This Mac > System Report > Graphics.

Verification

  • Graphics acceleration is smooth.
  • Metal is reported in System Information.

Original Question: "MacOS Catalina to BigSur"

Hi,

My gf has a macOS Build where she updated from Catalina to BigSur without checking whether it work first. Currently the computer boots and shows the apple logo and then reboots.

To be honest, I didn't build it and understand very little about hackingtoshes. I was looking for a way to troubleshoot the issue without having to re-install.

Any ideas where to start?
