How to Fix DRM on Big Sur
This mini-guide provides a structural approach to troubleshoot and fix the issue.
Prerequisites
- Confirm your hardware specifications (CPU, GPU, Motherboard).
- Ensure you have a bootable recovery USB and backup your EFI.
Fix Steps
- Check if your GPU requires WhateverGreen or specific boot-args (e.g., agdpmod=pikera).
- Ensure Metal acceleration is fully supported for your macOS version.
- Update Lilu and WhateverGreen to the latest versions.
Verification
- Reboot and verify if the functionality is restored and stable under typical usage.
Original Question:
I have been on Mojave for a while with an older Intel processor + RX 580. Considering moving to Big Sur but have heard that DRM is not as well supported.
I checked the WhateverGreen site and I saw only a 10.15 compatibility chart along with some comments about how Big Sur breaks some things by removing support for software DRM. I can live without support for DRM in Safari but am wondering if there are any other gotchas.
Can someone give me a rundown of what does and doesn’t work on Big Sur (for AMD Polaris and later, intel iGPU, and Nvidia Kepler) and/or direct me to an appropriate resource?
