How to Fix Thinkpad T440s fan doesn't work in macOS

This mini-guide provides a structural approach to troubleshoot and fix the issue.

Prerequisites

  • Confirm your hardware specifications (CPU, GPU, Motherboard).
  • Ensure you have a bootable recovery USB and backup your EFI.

Fix Steps

  1. Boot with -v keepsyms=1 debug=0x100 to identify the exact kernel panic.
  2. Validate your config.plist using ocvalidate.
  3. Ensure your EFI matches the Dortania guide specifications for your CPU generation.

Verification

  • Reboot and verify if the functionality is restored and stable under typical usage.

Original Question:

The fan is intact, but in macOS, it doesn't spin at all and becomes a Chromebook. Diagnostics show nothing wrong with the fan, and running them with the bottom case open, I can confirm. Opencore doesn't see the fan or something, and I want to fix this so I can get better performance out of this thing.
