How to Fix USB not booting, just showing macOS.dmg (name of usb stick) apple logo and bar starts then reboots

This mini-guide provides a structural approach to troubleshoot and fix the issue.

Prerequisites

  • Confirm your hardware specifications (CPU, GPU, Motherboard).
  • Ensure you have a bootable recovery USB and backup your EFI.

Fix Steps

  1. Boot with -v keepsyms=1 debug=0x100 to identify the exact kernel panic.
  2. Validate your config.plist using ocvalidate.
  3. Ensure your EFI matches the Dortania guide specifications for your CPU generation.

Verification

  • Reboot and verify if the functionality is restored and stable under typical usage.

Original Question:

I had Big Sur on my machine, I used the EXACT same files and methods to get it installed and it worked earlier.. I attempted a Monterey update and it failed so put the same USB stick in and now it won’t load. Anyone have any ideas?

Edit: I solved it by using Catalina base system dmg
