Just messing around with my old iMac to see what is possible.
- Upgraded to macOS Monterey and I found it remarkably stable
- Did some profiling with Geekbench 6, scores here
- Naturally these results are abysmal by todays standards
- Made the leap to macOS Sequoia and found that things were flakey all over the place
- Lots of lag, even with simple tasks like opening TextEdit
- Profiled with Geekbench 6, scores here
- Interesting that single core scores are better with Sequoia, but multicore scores are worse
Config here, yes this machine is very underpowered
- Processor: 2.7 GHz Quad Intel Core i5
- Graphics: Intel Iris Pro 1536 MB
- Memory: 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
My recommendation: If you have an old Mac this "under-speced", I would recommend a fresh install of Catalina. But if you must upgrade, do no more that Monterey.
