What Can You Do with an OCLP Mac?
Beyond being daily drivers for writers and researchers, OCLP-patched Macs are finding second lives in various specialized roles.
Popular Use Cases:
- Home Media Servers: Using an old Mac Mini with OCLP to run Plex or Jellyfin on the latest macOS for better security and metadata support.
- Dedicated Logic/Final Cut Stations: Keeping older but powerful Mac Pros (4,1/5,1) alive to run the latest creative suites.
- Retro Gaming Hubs: Using OpenEmu on a patched Mac to play classic games with modern controller support.
- Coding/Dev Machines: Using OCLP to install the latest Xcode on hardware that Apple has officially abandoned.
Original Question: "What do you use your OCLP Mac for?"
The OCLP dev's and community has been such an amazing project to follow. I find it stands for a fundamental right to using devices that you own long term, and the fact that a community has built this, purely through volunteers, is an amazing feat. Truly inspiring!
I've had my Late 2013 15inch MacBook since I bought it used in university. I installed it was on Mojave for the longest time since that's what seemed to work best. Once I finally installed Sequoia with OCLP the rest was history. I'm a writer and researcher, and while I'm obviously doing some heavy browsing, I can't imagine ever upgrading — it works perfectly. This is my daily driver.
I'd love to know what other people are using OCLP for? Just daily drivers? Servers? Home media servers? Retro gaming?? I saw this beautiful post about how OCLP has helped a couple business owners thrive.
It would be amazing to hear more stories like this. Especially for the dev's to see how they've helped people.
