Fixing Apple Logo Boot Freeze on 2017 iMac 5K

Stucking at the Apple logo without a progress bar during a macOS installation via OCLP is a common issue. On a 2017 iMac 5K, it is usually caused by incorrect OpenCore settings or incompatible external devices.

Step-by-Step Solutions

  1. Disconnect All Peripherals: Disconnect any external hard drives, docks, or extra monitors before booting. Keep only your keyboard, mouse, and the OCLP USB installer connected.
  2. Enable Verbose Boot: To see exactly where the boot process is hanging, enable Verbose Mode. Open the OCLP app (on another Mac if necessary), go to Settings, tick the 'Verbose Boot' box, rebuild OpenCore, and reinstall it to your USB. Booting will now display text lines instead of the Apple logo, showing you the exact file causing the freeze.
  3. Check Target Model: Ensure that when you built the OpenCore configuration, the target model in OCLP was correctly set to iMac18,3 (the identifier for the 2017 iMac 5K). Spoofing a different model can cause hardware hangs during the UEFI boot stage.
  4. Reset NVRAM: Resetting the NVRAM is essential. Boot your iMac, hold Command-Option-P-R immediately, and release the keys after the second startup chime before selecting the EFI Boot option again.

2017 iMac 5k stuck at Apple logo

Hello

Looking for some help, my first time trying this.

I’ve created a usb following all instructions and have taken a Time Machine backup of my device.

I boot to the option screen and select EFI boot, then selecto to install the MacOS.

The screen then goes to the Apple logo and has stuck on that screen for the past 10 hours. There’s no progress bar, to suggest anything is happening.

I’ve tried closing it and resting the NVRAM (a suggestion on another forum) but still get the same result.

Anyone have any ideas or suggestions?
