If you are selling a MacBook Pro 2015 running macOS Ventura via OCLP, you cannot use the standard "Erase All Content and Settings" feature as it can break the OpenCore bootloader. Here is the safest way to factory reset your Mac for sale.
Option A: Fresh Reinstallation (Recommended)
- Create an OCLP USB Installer: Open OpenCore Legacy Patcher, download macOS Ventura, and flash it to a USB drive. Make sure to build and install OpenCore to the USB EFI partition as well.
- Boot from USB: Restart the Mac, hold the Option key, select the EFI Boot option on the USB, and then select the Ventura installer.
- Format the SSD: In Disk Utility, select your internal SSD (usually "Macintosh HD"), click 'Erase', and format it as APFS with a GUID Partition Map. This completely wipes your personal data.
- Install macOS: Quit Disk Utility and install Ventura. When the system restarts and reaches the initial setup assistant (where the user chooses a country/language), shut down the Mac by holding the power button. This leaves it ready for the new owner to configure.
- Hand Over the USB: It is highly recommended to give the new owner the OCLP USB installer so they can manage the machine or boot it if they run into issues.
Option B: Standard Format and Revert to Supported OS
If the buyer does not want to use patched software, boot into internet recovery (Option-Command-R), format the drive, and install the last officially supported operating system (macOS Monterey for a 2015 MacBook Pro). This removes OCLP completely.
