How to properly install 3rd party kexts?

So I’ve been messing with Hacks for years (since my still running Dell Mini 9 with Snow Leopard) and I’ve never seen this question answered with any level of detail.

The folks at TonyMac suggest installing all third-party kexts to L/E as opposed to the Clover EFI partition (see https://www.tonymacx86.com/threads/guide-installing-3rd-party-kexts-el-capitan-sierra-high-sierra-mojave.268964/).

I believe everyone here believes L/E is improper and it’s better to install “vanilla” to the EFI partition.

My question .. which is right? Why? I get that updating is easier and more seamless in the EFI partition — but is it more stable?

Just curious what everyone thinks. Since the latest update (10.14.4) my dreaded no sound after sleep issue returned. I’m running completely vanilla and the standard kexts all in the EFI partition. Everything was rock stable in 10.14.3 and I’m tempted to revert.

Gigabyte Z97X-UD3H (alc 1150), i7 4790k, RX 580.
