How to Fix Issues running Ableton

Graphics issues usually stem from an unsupported GPU, missing acceleration patches, or incorrect boot arguments.

Quick Fix Steps

  1. Verify GPU support: Check if your GPU model is natively supported in your target macOS version via WhateverGreen documentation.
  2. Update kexts: Ensure Lilu and WhateverGreen are current and loaded before other GPU-related kexts.
  3. Check boot arguments: Add -v keepsyms=1 debug=0x100 for debugging, or agdpmod=pikera for modern AMD cards.
  4. Test Metal support: Open About This Mac > System Report > Graphics and confirm Metal is listed.

Verification

  • Graphics acceleration is smooth (not CPU-bound).
  • Metal is reported in System Information.
  • No GPU-related kernel panics on boot.

Original Question: "Issues running Ableton"

Hi all,

I built a hackintosh a few weeks ago for a studio I'm building in my house and I got it up and running with minimal issues. I put it aside for a while to finish up sound treatment and a few other things but now I'm about ready to start really using this thing. I hadn't actually loaded up a daw when I got it running initially, and now I'm running into a few issues when trying to run Ableton. It runs and everything in it seems to function so far, but I'm getting random audio artifacts coming through my monitors and every once in a while it freezes and the screen gets a yellow checkerboard overlaid on my screen.

I'm mostly just looking on input into where to start digging. I'm thinking the artifacts in Ableton may be related to the codec version I'm using, though I don't get any artifacts when streaming or playing music. And this seems like a bit of a stab in the dark but maybe the crashing is graphics related? Idk. If I let it go to sleep it also freezes and has a checkerboard of blue squares. I know the sleep issue is common but it may be worth noting it's freezing in a sort of similar way. In either case I'm only sitting at about 18% CPU load so that shouldn't be an issue.

Any help is appreciated, thanks!
