How to Fix Stuck on apfs_module_start:1689 when booting newly installed Catalina
Graphics issues usually stem from an unsupported GPU, missing acceleration patches, or incorrect boot arguments.
Quick Fix Steps
- Verify GPU support: Check if your GPU model is natively supported in your target macOS version via WhateverGreen documentation.
- Update kexts: Ensure Lilu and WhateverGreen are current and loaded before other GPU-related kexts.
- Check boot arguments: Add
-v keepsyms=1 debug=0x100for debugging, oragdpmod=pikerafor modern AMD cards. - Test Metal support: Open About This Mac > System Report > Graphics and confirm Metal is listed.
Verification
- Graphics acceleration is smooth (not CPU-bound).
- Metal is reported in System Information.
- No GPU-related kernel panics on boot.

Original Question: "Stuck on apfs_module_start:1689 when booting newly installed Catalina."
Hey guys, I'm still really stuck on this error for days now. Did fake ec patching, tried different acpi patches, usbinjectall, still nothing. Even swapping usb ports still did nothing.
Is there a way around this?
If you're curious, HS and Mojave does work on my build without any errors.
PC Specs:
C2D E7500
Asrock G31M-S
2GB DDR2
Nvidia GT 210
Also I'm using OpenCore, latest version.
