How to Fix Ryzen + RX570 - choppy H264 1080p playback on Big Sur

Graphics issues usually stem from an unsupported GPU, missing acceleration patches, or incorrect boot arguments.

Quick Fix Steps

  1. Verify GPU support: Check if your GPU is natively supported via WhateverGreen docs.
  2. Update kexts: Ensure Lilu and WhateverGreen are current.
  3. Check boot arguments: Add -v keepsyms=1 debug=0x100 for debugging, or agdpmod=pikera for AMD.
  4. Test Metal: About This Mac > System Report > Graphics.

Verification

  • Graphics acceleration is smooth.
  • Metal is reported in System Information.

Original Question: "Ryzen + RX570 - choppy H264 1080p playback on Big Sur"

I know currently Lilu/WhateverGreen is broken, but I'm not sure if that's the problem.

I can play all content just fine in web browsers, but when trying to play H264 1080p in vlc or mpv it's just dropping frames. H264 720p works fine. Tested with VLC and MPV, CPU utilization doesn't go above 18%.

VPADecoder is working and VideoProc also reports that all acceleration is working fine.

Any ideas what could be the cause?
