How to Fix Big Sur Asus Maximus VIII Hero - i5 6600K - RX 560

This mini-guide provides a structural approach to troubleshoot and fix the issue.

Prerequisites

  • Confirm your hardware specifications (CPU, GPU, Motherboard).
  • Ensure you have a bootable recovery USB and backup your EFI.

Fix Steps

  1. Verify your network controller model (Intel, Broadcom, Realtek).
  2. Ensure the correct kext (e.g., AirportItlwm or BrcmPatchRAM) is loaded in your config.
  3. Clear network interfaces and reset NVRAM if changes don't apply.

Verification

  • Reboot and verify if the functionality is restored and stable under typical usage.

Big Sur

This is an upgrade from Catalina(Clover based). Everything works!!

One minor annoying bug is that every once in a while, on boot the System adds a non-existent internal display(1024x768) to the side on iGPU (iGPU disabled in BIOS). NVRAM reset fixes it on the next boot.

System Specifications:

  • ASUS Maximus VIII Hero
  • i5 6600K - Overclocked to 4.5GHz
  • Patriot Viper 64GB (16Gx4) OC 3000MHz
  • AMD RX 560 (Bought on Facebook, apparently salvaged from Lenovo Desktop?)
  • NVIDIA GTX 1070 (Disabled under Device Properties in EFI on slot basis)
  • LG 4K UHD monitor - 27UK650-W
  • MX500 1TB SSD - Only 500G partitioned to run Big Sur
  • rEFInd bootloader for triple boot - Windows 10, PopOS, Big Sur(rEFInd --> OpenCore handoff)
  • TPLink Bluetooth
  • After market dual band WIFI dongle - based on RTL88xxBU, naturally AirDrop, AirPlay no bueno.

Followed OpenCore documentation and took reference EFI folders from others with Skylake, the one thing that was annoying was to discover that only HFSPlusLegacy.efi works on my system and HFSPlus.efi does not work, spent an entire day on this. Not sure why, I am thinking BIOS version/BIOS settings maybe.
