How to Fix OC - Black screen and cursor, I assume it's a common issue.
This mini-guide provides a structural approach to troubleshoot and fix the issue.
Prerequisites
- Confirm your hardware specifications (CPU, GPU, Motherboard).
- Ensure you have a bootable recovery USB and backup your EFI.
Fix Steps
- Check if your GPU requires WhateverGreen or specific boot-args (e.g., agdpmod=pikera).
- Ensure Metal acceleration is fully supported for your macOS version.
- Update Lilu and WhateverGreen to the latest versions.
Verification
- Reboot and verify if the functionality is restored and stable under typical usage.
Original Question:
After a year of trying to get on OC, I finally got farther than when I gave up. My problem has always been the lack of patience. Anyway, got Catalina finally booted, but I kept getting greeted with a black screen and cursor, then it disappeared after a little bit and I had to shutdown.
Setup: Asus Hero X Z390 with Coffee Lake (8700k). RX 580. Tried both the 580 and onboard igpu. Settings were as per OC manual for this board.
Did the setup properly, but this was actually a clover conversion with FileVault, so it was a bit more of a challenge. The FileVault part goes through fine. Just ends up with that black screen and cursor.
And I complied the ACPI in linux, so those files should be good.
I'll have to do a fresh install without trying to do a live Catalina conversion, but figured I'd ask if anyone knows the fix for this.
