How to Fix Can only boot off of USB Monterey

This mini-guide provides a structural approach to troubleshoot and fix the issue.

Prerequisites

  • Confirm your hardware specifications (CPU, GPU, Motherboard).
  • Ensure you have a bootable recovery USB and backup your EFI.

Fix Steps

  1. Boot with -v keepsyms=1 debug=0x100 to identify the exact kernel panic.
  2. Validate your config.plist using ocvalidate.
  3. Ensure your EFI matches the Dortania guide specifications for your CPU generation.

Verification

  • Reboot and verify if the functionality is restored and stable under typical usage.

Original Question:

Yea, so I installed Monterey (yay me) and when I drag my new EFI that I made for Monterey in my EFI partition of my drive, it boots to a kernel panic. But when I use my USB to boot, everything is fine. Why is that? This hasn't happened on Big Sur, even it's betas like 11.5 beta 2, so I don't know what changed in 12.
