How to Troubleshoot my Polaris GPU on macOS

Graphics and media-app issues are normally caused by missing Metal acceleration, an unsupported GPU path, or a fragile patch combination. macOS needs a supported graphics stack; WhateverGreen, NootRX or NootedRed can help only when the underlying GPU path is viable.

Quick Checks

  • Backup current state: Save a copy of your working EFI and run a full system backup before changing settings.
  • Identify hardware components: Note down your exact CPU, GPU, Wi-Fi card, and motherboard/laptop model.
  • Ensure utility alignment: Keep OpenCore, OCLP, and ProperTree updated.

Fix Steps

  1. Create a rollback point: Make a Time Machine backup and keep a copy of your last working EFI folder before editing OpenCore, kexts or root patches.
  2. Verify GPU support first: Confirm the exact GPU model and whether that macOS version supports Metal acceleration for it.
  3. Update graphics kexts: Refresh WhateverGreen, Lilu and any AMD-specific kexts together, not one at a time.
  4. Check boot arguments: Remove old experimental GPU boot args, then add back only the ones required for your hardware.
  5. Test acceleration: Open About This Mac, System Information and a Metal app before testing browsers, GarageBand or Pro Tools.
  6. Reduce app variables: Disable browser hardware acceleration or test another app build if only Chromium, Electron or CEF apps fail.

Do Not Continue If

  • Do not continue if: you do not have a working EFI backup, a Time Machine backup, or another bootable macOS installer.
  • Stop and capture evidence: if the machine stops booting, take a photo of the last verbose line before changing more settings.

Verify It Worked

  • The GPU reports Metal support in System Information.
  • Window animations are smooth and not CPU-bound.
  • The affected app opens after a clean reboot.
  • No repeated GPU restart messages appear in Console.

Rollback

  • Boot with a known-good EFI snapshot.
  • Temporarily remove experimental graphics patches.
  • Return to the last macOS version where acceleration was stable.

Next Action

  • Test now: reboot twice, reproduce the original problem, and confirm whether the same symptom returns.
  • If it still fails: record the Mac model, macOS build, OpenCore or OCLP version, GPU, Wi-Fi/Bluetooth chipset, and the last visible error.

  • "Help with 2.2.0 update please!!!":

Hello all, I’m hoping to get some help with an issue that I’m having…

I have a 2013 MacBook Pro which is running Ventura right now, yesterday I updated it to the latest version which was Ventura 13.7.4

Once I did the update and was preparing to do the root patches, I received the following message:

    • Running sanity checks before patching • Failed to find system version.plist • Unmounting root volume • Failed sanity checks, cannot continue with patching!!! • Please ensure that there are no updates pending

I don’t know what to do, and all the icons are small and the computer is running very slowly of course because it has none of the root patches. Please help, what can I do???

Would deleting and reinstalling OpenCore do more harm than good?

    Thank you in advance!!!!

Hp 15 dy with Ventura and a few problems. Please help.

1 My trackpad is not working, it's an elan trackpad. HID\VEN_ELAN&DEV_0712&Col03f trouble doing it. At first, the installer booted just fine, with no trackpad, so I used a USB mouse to continue with the installation. After installation, I would never boot all the way, I keep getting errors. So according to Dortania's instructions, I added arguments and -igfxcdc and -igfxdvmt, and I was able to boot all the way. I had some graphic issues but i was able to see the welcome screen. But instead of a mouse pointer, i had like 3 little dots. I was able to continue my setup all the way up. I took a screenshot but the 3 little dots i got for a mouse don't show up, also graphic acceleration does not seem to be working as well as sound. Bluetooth and wifi aren't working either but to be honest, this laptop had a Bradcom incompatible card, and i installed an Intel 7260 that not even Windows would take, so ill sort out wifi and Bluetooth later.

What i would like to have a help with its 2 things.

1 My trackpad is not working, its an elan trackpad. HID\VEN_ELAN&DEV_0712&Col03

2 Graphics not working correctly, i got Intel Irish Plus PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_8A52&SUBSYS_86C9103C&REV_07

This sunday I'm going to get me a different and more compatible wifi card, or open up the laptop back again to see if there's somethings wrong with it and perhaps that's the reason not even windows wants to work with it. But i want to tackle the trackpad and the graphics issue first.

Thanks in advance for any help.
