Preventing Accidental Tahoe Upgrades in Software Update
If you're on a 2017 iMac and want to stay on Sequoia without seeing macOS Tahoe prompts, the old 'Profile' trick has indeed been patched by Apple.
New Workarounds:
- Enrolling in Sequoia Beta: If the Beta channel isn't showing up, ensure you are signed in to iCloud with the same Apple ID you used to register on the Beta site. Sometimes it takes 24-48 hours for the 'Beta Updates' menu to appear in System Settings.
- Terminal Block: Try running
sudo softwareupdate --ignore "macOS Tahoe". If Apple has disabled this, use a third-party tool like MDS (Mac Deploy Stick) to manage your update catalogs. - Manual Updates Only: The safest method is to turn off all automatic checks and only update when you manually download a Sequoia installer.

 | Sequoia 15.7.7 (OCLP) on iMac 2017 (A1418) Since the trick of installing a system profile to block major version upgrades is no longer working, the only workaround to prevent Tahoe updates from showing up in Software Update is apparently to enrol in a Sequoia Beta channel. I've followed the instructions by signing up on the Apple Beta page with my Apple ID (https://beta.apple.com/en-GB/enroll-your-devices), and also tried to manually enable it in System Preferences using the command but the beta channels don't show up and just says 'Off'. Tried logging out and back in to this Apple ID, rebooted etc. Any ideas please? [link] [comments] |
