Upgrading an iMac 14,1 (Late 2013) Beyond macOS Monterey
If you have upgraded your iMac 14,1 to Monterey using OpenCore Legacy Patcher (OCLP) but are finding app support dwindling (like OneDrive or Office 365 dropping compatibility), you might be wondering if you can push it further. The short answer is yes.
Should You Upgrade?
- macOS Ventura: Highly recommended. It runs very similarly to Monterey on this hardware. Your Crucial SSD is essential and sufficient for this.
- macOS Sonoma: Possible, but it is much heavier on system memory. If you have 8GB of RAM, you will notice significant slow-downs. 16GB of RAM is strongly advised for Sonoma.
Step-by-Step Guide to Upgrading:
- Ensure OCLP is Up to Date: Open OCLP and update the app itself to the latest version.
- Build and Install OpenCore: Click 'Build and Install OpenCore' and install it to your internal SSD's EFI partition. Reboot your Mac.
- Download the Installer: Open OCLP, click 'Create macOS Installer', and download macOS Ventura (or Sonoma if you have upgraded your RAM).
- Install the OS: Run the installer directly from your Applications folder (or via a USB drive).
- Apply Post-Install Patches: Once the new macOS boots, you will not have graphics acceleration. Open OCLP immediately and select 'Post-Install Root Patch'. Reboot once finished.

 | Hey there! First of all, thanks so much for this project. I discovered it three weeks ago because I received an email saying my Office 365 would not work anymore and used it to update from Catalina to Monterey. Even though the OS is working quite well, it's been a while since it was released and so, I can see support on many apps seems to have been discontinued. Not as dramatically as not being able to use them, but yeah. Then there's OneDrive, which seems to unsync every so often... I've tried both the Microsoft pkg version, which ends up uninstalling because of incompatibilities, as well as the Mac App Store version, which is not very reliable. Now, I'm thinking of updating to a more recent OS, but not sure which one or if I have the adequate hardware to do so. Can you help me? Six years ago, we upgraded the HDD to a Crucial SSD and the iMac was reborn. Is this enough to update to a newer OS? I'd prefer not to open my iMac once again to upgrade my RAM... but if there's no other way I guess I can do it. [link] [comments] |
