Is it Possible to Boot macOS Sonoma on a RAID 0 Array on iMac 2011 (OCLP)?

Blogger Info: macOS Booting from RAID 0 Arrays in Modern macOS & OCLP

If you're looking to configure a RAID 0 SSD array to install and run macOS Sonoma on a 2011 iMac using OpenCore Legacy Patcher, here is the technical reality and recommended workarounds:

The APFS Boot Restrictions

Starting with macOS Big Sur, Apple introduced a cryptographically signed system volume (SSV). Because the system volume is sealed and cryptographically verified at boot time by the macOS kernel, booting directly from a Software RAID 0 formatted in APFS is no longer supported by Apple's boot architecture. While you can create a RAID 0 array for storage, macOS itself cannot be booted from a software-based RAID volume group.

Recommended Alternatives for Maximum Speed:

  1. Dual SSD Split Layout:
    • Install macOS Sonoma on a single high-performance SATA III SSD (configured in the main hard drive bay).
    • Install a secondary SSD in the optical drive bay (using a caddy).
    • Move your user directory (/Users/yourname) or heavy cache directories to the secondary drive to balance disk IO, or use it for active project storage.
  2. SATA III Controller Limitation:

The 2011 iMac has SATA III (6 Gb/s) on the main HDD and optical drive ports. A single modern SATA III SSD can read/write up to ~550 MB/s, which fully saturates the SATA controller. Running RAID 0 on SATA ports won't provide massive real-world performance gains for standard app loading, but will add boot stability risks.

Original Question: "Raid 0 + Mac OS sonoma on raid disc on imac 2011 possible ?"

Hello, I would like to give my 2011 iMac a new life. I want to upgrade to macOS Sonoma using OCLP, but I would like to install the macOS system on a RAID 0 array. Is this possible?

I have already looked online and the answer I found was that it is unfortunately not possible because, when switching to the APFS format, Apple blocks this—even with Carbon Copy Cloner, which used to allow it on operating systems prior to Big Sur.

I would love to get your expertise on this!

Thank you very much for your feedback.
