Improving Wireless Support on MBP 2009
The original AirPort card in the MacBook Pro 5,3 (Mid 2009) lacks support for newer 802.11ac standards and is poorly supported in macOS Sonoma.
Hardware Upgrade Options:
- BCM94360CS2: This is a popular upgrade. It provides native 802.11ac Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0, which works much better with OCLP.
- Adapter Required: You will need a mini-PCIe to MacBook Air/Pro SSD-style adapter to fit the newer card into the 2009 slot.
- Software Patches: Even with a newer card, you must apply the Modern Wireless root patches in OCLP to enable features like AirDrop and Handoff on Sonoma.
- Installation: Ensure you carefully disconnect the three tiny U.FL antenna cables to avoid snapping the connectors.
